Almost 120,000 industrial areas have been discovered in the USA which are homes to toxic chemicals. This category of these toxic chemicals is called "forever chemicals'' as they are very harmful to the health of the general public and responsible for various life-threatening diseases including cancer.
These ''forever chemicals'' consist of materials with perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances which are also abbreviated as (PFAS). It is estimated that almost 100,000 per year deaths in the USA are associated with these harmful, toxic ''forever chemicals''.
This extensive research, carried out by the United States Environmental Project Agency (EPA), points out the states of the USA with more industrial areas and facilities associated with these toxic chemicals. Colorado tops the chart with almost 21,400 industrial areas, California state comes in second with at least 13,000 facilities and Oklahoma state has only 12,000 such industrial areas.
The facilities with harmful chemicals, mentioned in this EPA report, are the industrial areas where chemicals are manufactured, waste management is done, and landfill operations take place. These facilities also consist of industries associated with plastics, mining, oil and gas works. Military areas and airports also come in these facilities categories.
This latest EPA report identifies four times more areas than previous studies done on the same subject. The facilities found on these mentioned locations are either active or inactive in the production or storage of such harmful toxic chemicals like perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances or (PFAS).
Most of the facilities are described as active in the production or retaining of the PFAS substances. These harmful PFAS substances have a very long life. Therefore, if the facility is inactive, their presence in an area also makes the areas surrounding this facility harmful for the general public.
This latest EPA report shows a very grim picture of the people living in these areas. People living in the areas identified in EPA reports are under a high level of exposure to this toxic perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances or (PFAS). These substances are a long-term threat to the environment. These hazardous PFAS-containing substances are potent and never break down in the natural environment. Therefore these toxic chemicals are the persistent source of health hazards for the people living in these areas.
There are more than 5,000 chemical compounds that are identified to have Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in them. Many electronic, plastic, oil, coal, fire, cleaning, non-stick cookware, military, and airplane industries have been using these chemicals since the 1940s. The exposure of these ''forever chemicals'' took place by food intake, breathing air, drinking water, and having contact with materials and products having PFAS in them.
This focus of discussions on the presence and working of these PFAS substances is new. Even so, there are enough studies that show that exposure to these harmful and toxic forever chemicals is injurious to human health in many ways. But very little research has been conducted to measure the exact extent of these harmful forever chemicals on human health.
Last year a worrisome report was published by a non-profit working group which shows that 200 million US citizens are already exposed to harmful PFAS toxic chemicals via drinking water contaminations. Such types of reports are alarming.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency has laid its comprehensive RoadMap to counter the PFAS issue. EPA has established a new department under its supervision, the EPA council on PFAS.
This new development of the EPA council on PFAS will map the whole lifecycle of harmful and toxic PFAS chemicals. and their multiple exposure pathways. This council will also chart out the ways to reduce the pathways these forever chemicals enter into the environment and will recommend the preventions for their exposure and potential contamination.
The EA council on PFAS will also pinpoint the original PFAS chemical polluters and will make these polluters accountable for their hazardous criminal actions by establishing penalties and punishments under the law. This council will also make policies and recommendations based on pure scientific evidence.
On the other hand, The American Chemistry Council (ACC) does not consider PFAS materials like toxic chemicals or dangerous to human health at all. The American Chemistry Council (ACC) is one of the biggest and oldest associations of chemical manufacturers of the United States of America which was founded in 1872. The ACC thinks that the chemical compounds containing PFAS chemicals are essential for the development of modern human societies.
Lots of advocacy groups including environment conservations & protection groups and some US lawmakers in parliament are very vocal and even wrote an open letter to Regan calling for emergency plans of action for mitigating PFAS chemical contaminants and their hazardous effects on human health like direct or indirect causes of cancer other serious health problems in human.
